An Interactive Map of Free Campsites and Onsen in Japan
Planning to explore Hokkaido on a budget? This interactive map of Japan's many free campsites and onsen will get you started.
A dedicated community of camping enthusiasts have joined forces to prove that travel in Japan – contrary to popular belief – can be done on a budget.
In this case, the budget is zero; the map shows more than 350 open campsites around Japan and almost 100 free onsen.
Those in the Niseko area don't need to go far to experience the Hokkaido wilderness. The Hangetsu Lake Campsite is located just east of Hirafu, at the foot of Mt. Yotei. It is open from June through to October and, needless to say, treats campers to some sensational views of Niseko's landmark volcano.
