Taste Niseko's Famous Black Curry
Walk through the old noren and feel transported into a Hayao Mizayaki's film at Cafe Nupuri in Niseko Station.
An assortment of small green plants line the narrow windowsill as rays of sunlight enter through the cloudy glass windows and reflect on to the dark wooden furniture. Wafting through the air is the faint scent of caramelised onion and fragrant spices as the owner prepares the cafe's specialty black curry.
Resembling an old German farmhouse, Cafe Nupuri has been serving locals and tourists for over 28 years and is run by Matsuda Yuko and her husband. The cafe is best known for their black curry.
Mildy spicy to foreigners, order a juicy hamburger steak or crispy bacon with Chinese yam curry; two of the most popular dishes on the menu. Take a satisfying bite into the pan fried crunchy yam and savour the deliciously rich curry made from a unique combination of spices.
The recipe to creating the dark colour of curry roux has been a secret between Mr and Mrs Matsuda. However, for the first time in the past three decades, the couple have shared their recipe with chefs at Lupicia, a company famous for tea and food manufacturing in Japan.
Touched by Lupicia Group Manager Hiroki Mizuguchi's love for Niseko, the owners decided to share the recipe in order for more people to taste their specialty dish and introduce them to Niseko, where the black curry was born.
Now, locals and visitors will be able to purchase Niseko's famous black curry at Lupicia stores across the country. Inside Niseko, Cafe Nupuri's black curry is also available at Niseko View Plaza.
Visit the cafe for a hearty lunch and enjoy the unique tranquil atmosphere the place has to offer.
