Jaga Matsuri (Potato Festival)
Over two days in early August the town of Kutchan celebrates its most famous export, the potato! Kutchan's main street is closed down for an extravaganza of food, fun and excitement. The local community turns out in force with drumming and dancing displays to wow the crowds. This festival should not be missed!

Hanazono Hill Climb
Taking place in conjunction with the Jaga Matsuri, the Hanazono Hill Climb is a bike race of epic proportions. The event is a non-stop climb from the centre of town to Goshiki Onsen. This one is not for the faint hearted. Be sure to catch the start while enjoying your favourite potato-based snacks!

Hirafu Festival
Located just a stones throw away from the famous Hirafu ski slopes, the Hirafu Matsuri celebrates all summer has to offer in this small town. Enjoy a selection of famous dishes from the great chefs in the area and relax with a drink or an ice cream as the sun goes down. With stunning visual performances like fire twirlers and fireworks to bring the celebration to an end, this is a truly magical festival.

Noboribetsu Jigoku Festival
A truly demonic display, the Noboribetsu Jigoku Matsuri is unlike any other festival in the area. Celebrating the famous hot springs of Noboribetsu, the festival enacts the release of Enma Daio the Ruler of Hell. Demon floats are paraded through the streets in dramatic fashion. This one will shock the senses.
